Licensed properties have been a cornerstone of TTRPG publishing since the 1970s. West End’s Star Wars Roleplaying Game is credited with keeping that property active in the years between the first two film trilogies. Designs such as Ghostbusters and Marvel Heroic Roleplaying have pushed the boundaries of TTRPGs with innovative designs packaged with beloved settings. In this one-hour panel, hear from TTRPG industry experts on the art of designing a licensed game, the benefits and drawbacks of working with another company’s worlds, and the unique design challenges posed by licensed properties. Elisa Teague is the Senior Producer of Roleplaying Games at Renegade Game Studios and is lead author and producer of the G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Power Rangers Roleplaying Games. Monica Valentinelli is an author, narrative designer, and director-at-large for the Science Fictions Writers of America. She has extensive experience working with fantasy and science fiction properties, including Vampire: the Masquerade, Dungeons & Dragons, and Firefly.
